Everything You Need to Know About Rotary Switches

Rotary switches are devices that can also be referred to as multi-functional electrochemical switches. Classified as human-machine interface components, they allow operators to control and interact with equipment. Rotary switches are a perfect alternative to push-button switches, and they are designed to turn with 360 degrees of freedom and they switch between their various positions by rotating.

Normally, with traditional push-button switches, users can only operate devices with two positions or modes, i.e., either on or off. With rotary switches, users get multiple positions to take advantage of. This is a very helpful feature of rotary switches as it can allow such devices to be used for controlling more than 2 circuits with just a single switch. To adjust positions or operational states, rotary switches can be turned with the aid of a rotating pin present inside of the component.

The Working Principle of Rotary Switches

Rotary switches are available in various shapes and sizes, yet the principle behind the working of all rotary switches is basically the same. They have a rotor or a spindle that comes with a protruding spoke, and when the spindle or rotor revolves inside the shaft, the protruding spoke starts moving into various positions to establish electrical terminal contact. This results in the activation of circuits attached to the device or allows for the adjustment of their electrical states. For most rotary switches, circuits travel through a wafer which is a circular element of the device.

Rotary switches usually come with a rotor, and these rotors have a star wheel or notched design instead of a smooth surface. This design helps in diminishing stalling while in an intermediate position between the content points and terminals. Typically, the terminals are stationed around the spindle or rotor at a set rotational interval, those of which are kept at 30, 45, 60, or 90 degree angles. The angles help significantly in determining the number of switch positions available.

Uses & Applications of Rotary Switches

To start with the basics, rotary switches are used for connecting functional circuit protection in devices to their electricity sources. Contrary to software-centric systems, rotary switches provide a fierce mechanical control system with instantaneous tactile feedback. Using software-based systems in certain fragile, hazardous settings can prove to be dangerous and cause great damage because of software errors.

Rotary switches are widely used in aircraft control panels. In car dashboards, these switches are used for choosing between various functions, like adjustable fans and air conditioning. In handheld radios, rotary switches are used for switching between multiple channels and bands. They are also used for choosing various ranges in voltmeters and other metering devices. rotary switches are used in professional audio convertors and splitters as well for the purpose of switching amongst channels and speakers.

Most commonly, you will see the use of rotary switches in variable speed fans, rotary lamp switches, rotary light switches, and dimmers. They are also used in many industries, like medical, military communication equipment, and construction. It is used in these industries for adjusting the conveyor belt speed, controlling diagnostic equipment, and adjusting oscilloscope frequency.

The Different Types of Rotary Switches

High-current rotary switches are used in higher voltage applications and are made from electrical discharge resistant materials like ceramics. Miniature rotary switches are used in settings like circuit boards where they can be fully open or closed. Rotary cam switches come with a shaft that helps increase or decrease electrical resistance when switched on. These switches are a great choice for application in electronic instruments that have variable currents.

Another miniaturized type of rotary switch is the binary rotary switch. These are designed for use in various delicate electronic equipment and use a binary on-off system. Momentary rotary switches are widely used in a vast variety of electrical circuits for providing a momentary change of state function. Heavy-duty rotary switches have been designed for providing robust mechanical control in tough, demanding industrial environments.

Rotary DIP switches come in groups of switches that are set up in a dual in-line package. This is a standard configuration that is generally used on printed circuit boards, in addition to other electronic components. They are also known as dual-in-line (DIL) switches and can be used for adjusting the electrical response of the equipment or device in which they are installed. Yaxley switches are traditional rotary switches and are not often used.
