What Is an Inspection Scope?

When operating an aircraft, proper maintenance can make or break the safety of your flight. As aircraft comprise many complex parts and systems, ensuring that all components are inspected thoroughly requires great attention to detail. Although pilots and technicians must be highly skilled to operate aircraft, people are prone to make errors, even during routine work, so completing routine procedures based on particular Inspection Scopes works to reinforce proper inspection during maintenance procedures. For your better knowledge, this blog will cover the steps of completing a proper Inspection Scope.

When inspecting complex systems, each individual piece of the equipment being inspected has its own Inspection Profile. For example, within a water heater, one would separately evaluate the Inspection Profiles of pipes, heating rods, thermostats, and more. By breaking down the system into its individual parts, more thorough inspection can be conducted. Then, the person conducting the inspection must complete a separate Inspection Scope for each profile. These profiles define the parts that must be inspected alongside the methods used for inspection.

In general, an Inspection Scope consists of an Equipment record, an Inspection Task record, Inspection Profile records, and Inspection Method records. To begin, the Equipment Record defines the whole pieces of equipment being inspected. This is different from Inspection Profiles, those of which define the subcomponents of the equipment circuit breaker to further break down the parts being inspected. Meanwhile, an Inspection Task record provides details about the inspection event that should be performed, including information such as the desired inspection date and any minimum or maximum date ranges for the inspection event. Last, Inspection Method records define the methods that should be used to inspect the individual subcomponents. Inspection Scopes are beneficial in that they can also help inform future inspections for non-routine purposes.

Moving forward with the water heater example, an Inspection Profile for pipes might be listed alongside the Inspection Methods of checking for cracks and evaluating heat loss as a general practice. However, if one then discovers issues with water heating when using their systems, such as the shower only releasing cold water, one would conduct an inspection using a subset of the entire Inspection Profile. In other words, one would specifically investigate the pipes and related components, but not the entire equipment system.
